Creative Critical Reflection
The conventions for music videos consist of the music video’s style, the editing techniques, the sound effects, the mise-en-scene and the representations. The style of my music video is “concept”. The video revolves around the feeling of accomplishment and friendship. I did not use any transitioning in my music video due to my visual preference. However, I did include a slow motion clip 35 seconds into the music video. The sound effects included in my music video is just the music. This creates a non diegetic sound, since the actors in the film ( my sister, my cousin and I) couldn’t hear. For the mise-en-scene, I complete all aspects of it. I included props that people use everyday, I made sure to keep it simple. I used a ring light to make certain clips brighter and then there was the natural light of outside and the ceiling lights in the kitchen and living room. Our costumes were just casual clothing and our hair was in protective, natural styles. My sister wore eyeshadow and I had on lipgloss for the makeup. There were about 4 different settings: the kitchen, the living room/stairs, my cousin’s room, and outside. There are a mixture of warm and cool colors in the music video, but you can see the bright colors more. The representation is basically that everything is better together, and that having a shoulder to lean on is better than sticking it out alone. This represents social groups like large groups of friends or any type of bond that two or more people have.
2.How does your project engage with audiences AND how would it be distributed as a real media text?
My music video offers advice as well as a message and life lesson. This music video can reach out to people that are feeling down and have no hope or motivation. The music video can inspire others to never give up, and to think positively. It can also let people know that it’s ok to ask for help if you need it. It will remind them that there’s always someone there for them whether it be a family member or true friend. Watching this music video on a popular app called YouTube makes it an authentic media text. The video can also be shared worldwide which will increase the publicity it gets. The music video is also kid friendly, as is the song which widens its audience.
3.How did your production skills develop throughout this project.
I’ve grown up watching many music videos, and I’ve somewhat dreamed on making my own music video. I’ve always been good at editing though. I edit for my own personal videos, for my friends, and others. I’ve gotten more comfortable with embedding youtube videos and using an app called Inshot. I’ve always used that app for editing, but with this project, I added music and had it fade out at the end. Inshot has a feature where you can add music in from a video, so I screenrecorded the song from YouTube and added it in. I believe I have gotten more skilled when it comes to trimming my videos. I also learned how to slow specific videos and even split clips.
4.How did you integrate technologies- software, hardware and online- in this project?
For starters, I used my phone to record my music video. I got the different angles like pan and tilt and I used my powerpoint on camera angles for reference. I used the camera app that came with my phone to record my music video. First I thought about using iMovie and I would just download the song off of Apple Music, and add it in. But it said due to copyright, I couldn’t use the song. I decided to go to YouTube and screenrecord the song off of there. I trimmed the song to 1 minute to meet the video requirement. I made sure include some instrumental, encouraging words and the chorus. I went to the app called Inshot, and added the screen recording with the music. I trimmed and edited the video to match the song on the same software. I went back to YouTube and uploaded the video publicly and made sure to address that I do not own copyrights to this music.
