Title Research: Relic

This opening sequence is from the movie Relic. I found this movie on the Art of the Title website. I will be answering the following questions about this opening sequence.

What titles are displayed during the opening sequence?
In the opening sequence, there are a total of 16 different types of titles. these titles are the film titles, director, writer, producers, executive producers, cast members, cinematographer, production designer, editors, sound designer, who the music is by, line producer, first assistant director, costume designer, makeup and hair designer, who the casting by, and who the Australian casting is by. The opening sequence also includes this message that states "By watching this film legally, you have supported thousands of creatives, distributors, and crew as listed below."

What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?
In the opening sequence, you can see the white words against the black background. Additionally, there are faint, white chalky looking designs floating about. These "designs" seem to take the shape of objects such as butterflies and/or moths, trees, and cells. This is just a personal observation I have made. Different people might see different things, however the butterflies are quite clear to see.

What connotations do these images carry?
This white cloudy design choice has a mysterious connotation. The viewers can make choose what to make of it. The white words on the black background make it seem like the white light, lights up the way in the dark.

How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?
As mentioned previously, black is a mysterious color and can also be described as dangerous. Like someone saying "going out at night by yourself is dangerous." The white words somewhat symbolize a flashlight, or the light in the dark that could be used as protection. The Horror genre includes many movies in the dark where the victim carries a flashlight to light the way, and protect themselves from villains that are harmed by light.

What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?
The opening sequence includes some ambient sound. The main sound that can be heard is the music. This music has a similar sound as the opening sequence of the film She Dies Tomorrow. A violin crescendo plays in the background. There is the sound of a faint heartbeat, that changes volume. There is also a sound of thumping or somebody hitting a door or an object every now and then. Eventually all the sounds dramatically and immediately stop and the screen goes blank.

How has technology been used effectively?
There are not any transitions, but the words disappear and reappear onscreen. On some part where the words change, they change on beat with the sound of the thumping. The white designs I mentioned earlier, move around the screen, and then glitch into a new ahead position. These designs combine at one point as the music calms down, before hearing that crescendo again. The screen fades out as that ending message appears with faint music.
